Reset SMC and PRAM

SMC on Macbook with non-removable battery: (Google for different instructions if you do have a removable battery)

  1. Shut down your Mac
  2. Hold down shift + control + option on the left side of your keyboard
  3. Press the power button while these keys are held, and then release all keys at once
  4. (Note: the following is true on my Mac but may not be the same for all Macs:) The LED on the power cable was orange before you started this. After the SMC is reset, you will know that it worked because the LED will flash green, and then change back to orange
  5. Press the power button to boot your Mac

PRAM

  1. Shut down your Mac
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R
  3. Turn on your Mac
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound
  5. Hold these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time

Combo Updates Updates

Source: How to Use a Combo Update to Install Mac OS X Updates

combo updates can be helpful for troubleshooting a failed Mac OS X update, and running through one can often remedy a broken or borked update attempt.

What is a Combo Update?
Essentially Combo Updaters allow for updating a Mac from a prior version of OS X within the same major release, without necessitating the Mac being on the immediately preceding version point release. In other words, it’s a combined update, including all necessary components from prior point releases
