SNMP Monitoring on Cisco Switches

To enable SNMP on Cisco switches:

snmp-server community public RO
snmp-server community private RW

Replace “public” with a unique name other name than public!! (for security best practise)

to see the interface numbers on the Cisco switch ports:

show snmp mib ifmib ifindex

STG live monitoring tool

SNMP Traffic Grapher STG

This tool is good because it provides real live monitoring, eg measure each second, rather than historic monitoring systems like PRTG where it only records data every minute.

View > Settings

  • Target address = switch IP
  • Community = eg “public”
  • Green OID: change the last digit to the interface ID on the switch port
  • Red OID: Do the same

Green = inbound (ie data coming IN to the switch port), blue = outbound (data coming OUT of the switchport)
example: internet download - the router port will be green, the PC port will be blue

Find which switch ports have devices online

show interfaces status | i connected

Find which port a MAC is on

eg if you want to find and monitor a specific printer:

swi01#show mac address-table address 1C:7D:22:0D:8C:B7

        Mac Address Table
