Renaming Files or Folders in DFS Root results in Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

  • Created a new text file in \\domain.local\dfsroot\users\staff\tstaff
  • It works if you do not change the name
  • However, if you type a different file/folder name, it gives error: Rename File - An unexpected error is keeping you from renaming the file. if you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem. Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
  • Deleting files works
  • Saving changes to files works
  • Renaming an existing file/folder results in the same error message

This post suggests the Offline Files cache may be corrupt. The fix worked:

  1. Elevated Command Prompt → “reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Csc\Parameters /v FormatDatabase /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f ”
  2. Couldn't disable Offline Files due to policy, but added the reg key to FormatDatabase
